We often get asked: What is the best month for a wedding in Crete? This is one of the most popular questions, alongside inquiries about budget (you can read more about the latter in one of our previous posts here).
With the climate changing, what once felt predictable now includes unexpected weather phenomena. For example, at one of our weddings last year, despite a forecast showing zero chance of rain, the sky suddenly poured out its monthly rainfall. Because of this, we now plan for “Option B” arrangements during certain months.
April
Crete is absolutely spectacular in April. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, the island is lush and blooming, and the air feels alive with the energy of a new season. Businesses begin to reopen after the quiet off-season, making it a charming time for couples who prefer mild, warm weather. It’s also perfect for those who enjoy hiking, as the trails are at their best. However, if you’re not a fan of cool water, you might find the sea still a bit fresh for swimming.
May
In our opinion, May is ideal, though it can be unpredictable, with a higher chance of rain. Every wedding we plan in May includes a solid backup plan to ensure smooth transitions if rain occurs. This affects the choice of venues we recommend, as they must offer both open spaces for clear skies and proper shelter for rain.
June
June is perfect for weddings. It’s not too hot yet, the sea is warm enough for all to enjoy, evenings are balmy, and the island has that quintessential summer feel—without the intense heat.
July & August
July and August mark the peak of summer heat, and each year seems to get hotter. August is also the height of the tourist season due to Greek national holidays and European vacations. Roads and streets are busier, hotels and venues book up fast, and the intense heat can challenge makeup and flowers to stay fresh throughout the day. The heat also takes a toll on energy levels. If you’re set on an August wedding, we highly recommend booking toward the end of the month.
September
September is still very much a summer month, despite its autumn label. It’s as warm as early July, though there’s a slight chance of rain.
October & November
These months are truly wonderful for weddings. Daytime temperatures are warm, evenings are cooler, the sea is still pleasant for swimming, and the island is less busy. However, unlike April and May, the scenery has more earthy, sandy tones due to the dry summer months, so the greenery in photos may be less vibrant.
In summary, Crete offers eight beautiful months of summer-like weather, allowing you to choose the perfect time for your wedding based on your preferences. And while summer dominates, we’ve also planned some lovely winter weddings.
