Civil wedding in Crete is a simple but solemn procedure.

After exchanging rings and signing all the necessary documents, you will start celebrating a new relationship status by sipping a glass of cold champagne.

A few years ago the only option to get legally married in Crete e was an appointment at the town hall. Nowadays an exit registration is possible almost at every region of Crete. 

Here is a list of the documents you need to provide to tie a knot in Greece legally:

Civil wedding documents

Passport Copies of both parties (Photocopy of original).

Birth certificate of bride and groom, with both parent’s names inside(one for each of you) certified by Apostille stamp required

Certificate of non-impediment to marriage from the municipality, where you are registered/county office/Town hall certified by Apostille stamp required. This document certifies that there are no any impediment to the coming marriage

If one or both parties have been in previous marriages, you need to get a Divorce Certificate, or a certified copy of the Decree Absolute, from Civil Authorities. Certified by Apostille stamp required

Official document from the Court, if you have changed your name.

Death certificate (Contact us if applicable).

Town hall fees vary from 100 euros to 550 euros (season – 2025 quote). Translation in Greek should be made by the official translators on the territory of Greece. 

However, weddings at the town halls’ venues are also popular. Rethymno provides ceremonies at the 16 cent chapel in the heart of the Old Town and at the historical venue Fortezza.

Chania and Heraklion town halls offer you to tie the knot at the pretty casual halls, and Chania accepts exit ceremonies as well. You can find more details in our blog post.

Like Rethymnon, the scenic Chania was also inherited from Venetian Republic. Chania’s old harbor and many-colored streets would make an ideal location for romantic wedding shoots. Add the wedding photo-shoot to the official registration ceremony.  

Iraklion (Heraklion or Herakleion) is comparatively big clumsy city. Although, it boasts a hall with a truly magnificent structure, a stylishly beautiful embankment and a great number of top-rank restaurants and bars. 

Wedding ceremony at the Town Hall enables couples to register a civil partnership.

The ceremony will be conducted in Greek or English, in the presence of a translator and two witnesses.

Outdoors civil weddings are available in many regions of Crete, but rules can change from a season to a season, therefore we always update information from the local authorities before confirm the possibility of legal marriage at the area you are interested in
