Wedding venue in Crete: the Fortezza

The Fortezza is the one of the most popular wedding venues in Crete. The citadel of the city of Rethymno, it was the biggest fortress in the island, built by the Venetians in the 16th century. In 1646 it was captured by the Ottomans. Actually, the story has began earlier. At the Ancient times there was Rithimna city and the Temple of Arthemis. The fort is so large that it could host and protect the entire population of the town. The grand pentagonal has perimeter about half a kilometer long. Above the arch of the Main Gate there was an emblem of the Republic of Venice – the Lion of St. Mark. But after 500 years it has gone.
But we, wedding planners in Crete, we love the Fortezza not only for the special historical atmosphere this place brings to a wedding day, but also because from its wall one can have a breathtaking panoramic view.
In winter the Fortezza is all green inside, meantime you can see the tops of the White Mountains covered by snow. A combination Blue-White-Green is so unusual to Crete. I would recommend you to consider the Fortezza as an amazing venue if you plan to get married in Crete in winter.
If you are looking for a privacy, it’s better to have a ceremony at the beautiful ex-mosque of Sultan Ibrahim. Before the Ottomans invasion it was an Orthodox Basilica.
